Certificate of Occupancy Required

Certificate of Continued Occupancy (CCO) for residential resale · Borough of Glen Rock Building Department (Code Enforcement Bureau), with Fire Prevention sign-off

  • Application and fee to the Building Department (third floor, Municipal Building, 1 Harding Plaza)
  • Records review: all construction permits must be properly inspected and closed
  • Visible inspection of the house by the Building Department for code violations affecting occupant safety
  • Separate Fire Prevention smoke/CO inspection; certificate not issued until Fire Prevention approves
  • DPW inspects the public sidewalks, as applicable
  • Common failures: double-cylinder deadbolts with removable interior key on a primary exit door, vinyl dryer or kitchen exhaust connectors, extension cords for sump pumps or garage door openers
  • Permits are required for water heaters, heating systems, water softeners, lawn irrigation, electric wiring, EV chargers, patios and decks

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required

  • Single family: UL-listed 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms (no battery compartment) on each level including the basement, within 10 feet of each sleeping area entrance or inside each sleeping area, and in each bedroom
  • Two family: on each level including the basement, near sleeping areas, in the main living area, in common stairwells and hallways, outside each doorway, and at the front of the basement stairs
  • Hardwired (AC) smoke alarms from original construction or rehabilitation cannot be replaced with battery-only alarms; all detectors must be less than 10 years old
  • CO alarm within 10 feet of each sleeping area entrance or inside each sleeping area; CO detectors older than 5 years (manufacture date) must be replaced
  • Portable fire extinguisher 2A:10B:C under 10 pounds within 10 feet of the kitchen, with its bracket, dated within 12 months or tagged (form still lists it)
  • Secondary power source label ("CAUTION: MULTIPLE SOURCES OF POWER") within 18 inches of the main panel and the meter, if the home has a generator, solar panels or battery storage
  • Legible house numbers visible from the street; front-door deadbolts must be keyless on the inside
  • Monitored or low-voltage systems must be tested with an NFPA 72 report and monitoring kept active
