Certificate of Occupancy Required
New Tenant/Resale Certificate (Certificate of Continued Occupancy, CCO) · Borough of Bergenfield Construction Code Department / Code Enforcement (GovPilot form is headed Code Enforcement)
- Inspection of the home before the sale (exterior and interior checklist: walkways, stairs and handrails, roof, gutters, paint, house number, plumbing, sump pump discharge, heater venting, debris, hedges, unregistered vehicles, broken glass, deadbolt with thumb latch, water heater relief valve extension, removal of basement kitchens built without permits)
- Smoke detectors on each level and carbon monoxide detectors within 10 feet of bedrooms (sealed units if not hardwired)
- Fire extinguisher (form still lists it)
- Licensed plumber's Water Service Line check (lead or galvanized) and backflow preventer certification if there is a lawn or fire sprinkler system, before an inspection is scheduled
- Sump Pump Certification if the house has a sump pump, before an inspection is scheduled
- Notarized application signed by owner and purchaser, attesting to the use (one family / two family) and maximum occupancy
- Owner certifies the dwelling meets zoning and that no rubbish, debris or bulk garbage will be left before new occupancy
- Agreement of Use Regarding Basement/Attic and Verification of Occupancy (rental registration notice) forms in the application packet

Smoke and CO alarm certificate Required
- Smoke detectors on each level of the dwelling, including basements (excluding attic or crawl space); 10 year sealed units on the CSDCMAC form
- Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector outside each separate sleeping area (within 10 feet of bedrooms)
- All smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in working order
- Fire extinguisher (form still lists it)
